Pony Racing Taster Days 2024

Come for a day out and find out about Pony Racing.

The day is free and you don't need a pony.

Activities on Taster Days include:

A tour of a Racecourse to see what happens behind the scenes
Having a go on a horse simulator (Equicisor) with a jockey coach
Trying fun fitness and balance exercises used by jockeys
Testing how fit you need to be to ride in a pony race
Learning about the racing equipment used by jockeys and horses
Watching Pony Racing in the afternoon
Finding out how to get involved whether or not you have a pony

Taster sessions are unmounted and run in the morning with Pony Racing to watch in the afternoon. Timings and other information will be emailed to those registered a week before the day.

All are welcome with a recommended participant age of 7 - 15 years old, to be accompanied by a parent/guardian for all activities.

Rare Opportunity: Jason Webb Demo

We have organised a visit and demonstration with Jason Webb, 'a UK-based Australian horse trainer, who has built an outstanding reputation for starting young horses and solving behaviour and ridden issues'.... if you haven't heard of him, take a look at his website!!! https://yourhorsemanship.com/

This will be at his yard - Risebridge Farm, Peasley Lane, Goudhurst, TN17 1HP on Thursday 30th May, 2pm start and roughly 1.5hrs.

During the visit he will be doing a groundwork demonstration focussing on behavioural issues and handling techniques, as well as a ridden demonstration looking at young horse training and common ridden behavioural issues.

We are really lucky to have the opportunity to watch Jason first hand, and this will definitely be suitable for members of all ages, especially with welfare and equine learning now a key focus in the Pony Club efficiency tests.

They have kindly offered us a reduced rate for ESPC Members: £10.50

Parents are welcome to stay (in fact we think this will be extremely useful for parents too!!) at a further reduced rate of £5.50 (£15.50 total for Member +1)

Eventers Practice Day

at Lodge Farm, Matfield, Kent TN12 7ET.

Ideal practice for Area competition.

There will be the chance to perform a Dressage Test with a judge, a Clear Round Showjumping Course & a 45-minute XC session with an instructor where we will practice the flagged course in sections incorporating combinations, water etc.

We hope this will give members the opportunity to train at all 3 disciplines with support from coaches (Angi Whittington, Anna Hanson, Rebecca Amess & Lyndsay Ryan as dressage judge)

Combinations will be required to be confidently jumping at least 70 to do the whole practice day but please see the additional options for an Introduction to XC and Clear Round for those who don’t feel ready for this level. We will need some volunteer parents for dressage writing, XC support & possibly car parking.

B Test Celebrations

Our senior members headed up to Surrey and passed the ridden and/or care Pony B test efficiency tests this October half term week.

Firstly HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to members ….

Jess Perry - passing Ride & Care

Beth Hobden - passing Ride & Care

Hannah Gardiner - passing Ride

Emily Sargent - passing Care

These tests are not only Pony Club achievements but are also recognised within the industry as a measure of competence.

They follow a similar syllabus to college diplomas and BHS stages etc and it should not be underestimated how much work and commitment candidates put in to gain them, so well done girls!

The best thing about the Pony Club tests is all the different ways you can train for them - the girls above range from 14yrs to 20yrs old.

I thought I’d share their different pathways and hopefully inspire other members to aim for their next tests!

Hannah was a direct entrant having gained qualifications previously at college.
Beth passed her C+ earlier in the year and on the basis of her knowledge was encouraged to sit her B Test the same year.
Jess and Emily attended many evening training sessions over the past two years, then went to a B Test training camp this summer held by our neighbouring pony club.

All the girls also took part in zoom training, working rallies and studied at home at their own pace.

….. And if your horse isn’t ready that’s ok! Emily has borrowed ponies, swapped rides & went to the mechanical horse training so has still been working on her riding while her horse has been recovering from an injury. She decided to take the Care part of the test this week and will take her Ride when her horse is ready in the spring.

So as you can see there’s lots of ways to access coaching and training, with help and support from our wonderful coaches at clinics, working rallies and camps - and once you’ve reached the minimum age for each test, there’s plenty of time to take it!

2023 Area Dressage Report

Area Dressage - 21 May 2023 - Hickstead

One Area competition for each of the main disciplines takes place across the region each summer. Top placings result in qualification to the prestigious national Pony Club Championships in August or the Grassroot Regional Championships in September. We are very proud of all our members who achieve a level of riding sufficient to enter Area and delighted for the lucky, talented few who qualify to attend Championships, definitely a PC career highlight for members and parents!

Wow!!! What can I say - the Area dressage riders were just FABULOUS today!!!

In face of traffic adversity �� our wonderful riders entered in at A and gave it there best shot! ��

�� Our Grassroots Orange Team achieved team 2nd place!!! ��

�� With both Brooke and Lily winning their sections!!! ��

�� A huge well done also goes to: Sophia, Jess P, Poppy H, Alice DT, Imogen - w ho all achieved top ten placings!! ��

��And of course none of this would be possible without all the team members putting in lots of effort - so I’d like to give a special thank you and big well done to: Meg, Sophie, Olivia, Carys a nd Mattie - y ou all rode beautifully and did ESPC proud ��

��I’d also like to give a little mention to Daisy and Emily who both wanted to take part in today but whose horses were unable to - and so instead they helped out ��

�� Well done girls, volunteering and helping is something to be very proud of and keeps pony club going ��‍��

We are very proud of all our members who achieve a level of riding sufficient to enter Area.

An absolute AMAZING day at Area mounted games on Saturday.

So proud to be part of the East Sussex family that we have. The children were FANTASTIC, all encouraging and supporting each other .

Mini Camp 2023 will be held at Montague, Hankham by kind permission of the Hole family.

For this camp, children and ponies attend each day (no staying over) and one parent or carer will need to remain onsite with their child/ren at all times .

There will be a mix of ages and abilities (of both riders and ponies!) with a wide variety of activities planned, both on and off ponies.

The ethos of mini camp is fun and friendship, improving riding, equine skills and knowledge in a friendly and supportive atmosphere with fabulous instructors, like minded children and parents.

Mini camp is open to children of all abilities who are under 8 years old.

Total cost is £96 - a £26 deposit is required at time of booking and then 2 payments of £25 each are due 30/6/23 and 31/7/23 by Bank Transfer

For this camp, children and ponies attend each day (no staying over) and one parent or carer will need to remain onsite with their child/ren at all times .

There will be a mix of ages and abilities (of both riders and ponies!) with a wide variety of activities planned, both on and off ponies.

The ethos of junior camp is fun and friendship, improving riding, equine skills and knowledge in a friendly and supportive atmosphere with fabulous instructors, like minded children and parents.

Junior camp is open to children of all abilities who are currently in Years 3, 4, 5 or 6. However older members are very welcome too, providing that we have enough interest to be able to accommodate everyone in a suitable group.

Total cost is £151.00 - a £51 deposit is required at time of booking and then 2 payments of £50 each are due 31/5/23 and 30/6/23 by Bank Transfer

What are Area competitions all about?

Representing East Sussex Branch of the Pony Club at an Area competition is a proud moment many members strive for. These will be upon us VERY soon.

What are Area Competitions?

Pony Club UK is divided into 19 Areas
ESPC is one of 17 Branches which form AREA 11
There is just ONE, discipline specific Area 11 competition to establish which talented members will qualify for The JCB Pony Club Championships, Regional Championships (Grassroots) or a sport specific Championship.

We are incredibly proud of all our members who achieve a level of riding sufficient to enter Area, definitely a PC career highlight for members and their families!

We were delighted to put forward 69 ESPC members in 2022 Area competitions:

Area Dressage x 19 - 4 qualified for Championships

Area Show Jumping x 25 - 1 qualified for Championships

Area Eventing x 7 (reduced from 17 due to extreme heatwave) - 2 qualified for Championships

Area TET x 18 - 8 qualified for Championships

Who can compete?

New Area 11 Eligibility Rule

In order to be eligible to compete at Area competitions, members from all branches in Area 11 and their horse/pony must have actively taken part in at least 3 rallies (since 1st July 2022), qualifying coaching, or training sessions during the previous 12-month period unless prevented from doing so by illness, absence from home (attending uni, college, work) or any other reason which in the opinion of the DC justifies absence.
At least one rally must have been in 2023
For the purpose of this rule a “rally” is one which is organised by a branch committee ie ESPC working rallies at Golden Cross, attendance at regular discipline sessions, test training courses, PC Camp, summer rallies at Montague. In addition discipline specific Area training days are acceptable if approved by our DC in advance.
The combination of horse and rider are required to prove their competence, safety, plus horse/pony fitness, at the level that the member wishes to participate. This is compulsory for ESPC members wishing to participate at any level of Eventing, Show Jumping or Tetrathlon. Under no circumstances will a combination be allowed to compete in an Area Competition at a level they have not previously completed to an agreed standard, at an approved competition.

What happens next ….

Training opportunities will be organised and PC competitions highlighted - attend as many as you can!
Discuss which section/class to enter with discipline coordinators, coaches, parents & peers
Check eligibility, classes, tack rules etc, it is strict! https://pcuk.org/officials/ rulebooks/
Team members are expected to demonstrate commitment & loyalty to the Pony Club and their branch. Team selection will be influenced by this.

A year of highs and lows

Darcey and Jack had a year of highs and lows.

Starting after the October rally in 2021 where they flew round a fabulous 70 showjumping course. Then life took a dramatic turn for our dear Jack . . .

We found him in the early morning rolling and sweating in a terrible state. We knew instantly it was that moment every owner dreads colic. We called Cliffe straight away, for what felt like the longest 30 mins Manon arrived treated him and we prayed. But unfortunately he didn’t show any signs of improvement so we got him in the trailer and rushed him to the clinic. Within an hour he got worse and we were told surgery was the only option to save him. Darcey's eyes filled with tears and as a family we decided to go for the surgery.

Up until now Darcey had been so strong but saying goodbye to him before surgery broke all of our hearts. After what felt like an eternity we had a phone-call to tell us he had made it through the operation. Over the week after his operation Darcey went up every evening to be with him.

We got to bring him home a week later and unfortunately he got colic again when he got home possibly from travelling. Darcey stayed up with him for 2 days and nights. We got him through it though .

Over the winter each week that passed he got stronger and stronger. Then got cheekier and cheekier !!! We started taking him out to a few shows in the spring with pony club friends where he qualified for the sunshine tour in various showing classes. Then he managed to do his C Test with Darcey . I think we all held our breath including the instructors!!!! Which they passed.

We hadn’t booked into Senior Camp as we didn’t think he would be fit enough but then a space became available. He was looking so fit and well we decided to give it a go. Wow what a week it was torrential rain, thunder and lightning but fantastic fun!

Jack loved every minute of it and so did Darcey. Unfortunately he was a bit tired and sore on the last day so he didn’t do the final ride but what a fantastic group of friends Darcey had 3 girls straight away offer their ponies to her to ride Sophie Novell, Jess Perry & Grace from OSB. Darcey chose the wonderful Gus who didn’t disappoint her and they did a lovely final musical ride . What wonderful kind thoughtful girls to support Darcey.

But the icing on the cake was at prize giving where Clare awarded them the camp cup. I will happily admit we all shed a few tears after what had felt like a very long journey. What a wonderful way to end the summer.

Through all of this time we have been supported by a great Pony Club family. We have had messages, phone calls and love sent .

Issie Pincus and Pippa Stoneham have been fabulous friends, including her even though she didn’t always have a pony to ride. I have had a lot of mummy hugs which I am very grateful for. L ucy Dixon Thompson very kindly let us ride Gwen while we tried to get Jack fit. W e were elated to spend 2 days at the sunshine tour where he came 7th in a big veteran class. Proud beyond words for both of them.

We are all so lucky to have such a supportive pony club

What a smashing year

What a smashing year me and Gus had last year training and competing for East Sussex Pony Club!

My journey with Gus has by no means been easy. There has been ups and downs, tears and cheers however overall it was an absolute blast last year and it’s all thanks to everyone at team ESPC. I have made everlasting memories, incredible new friends and developed a passionate love for competing!

A few of my highlights from 2022:

Lodge farm ODE:

It was mine and Gus’s 2nd one day event so it was a bit of a risk entering but what was the worst that could happen ��. We stated off with our best test to date scoring a lovely 31.2% putting us nicely up the leader board. Then was sj. Now Gus isn’t the most careful horse ever so I was crossing my fingers he would pick his feet up of which he did resulting in a nice clear. There was then quite a lot of pressure for xc knowing I had a good dressage and clear sj but the absolute legend pulls of a lovely clear to finish 4th!

Senior camp 2022:

Now anyone that knows or has been to any sort of camp will know it’s probably the best week ever. From loading all our stuff into the spare side of the trailer and any inch of space left in the boot, to TikTok’s and evening activities there’s never a dull moment (especially when Jess is around). Totally not us up at 6am walking the dog and eating Nutella on toast whilst everyone else is asleep (Sorry Clare��) And of course I can’t forget clearing 1.10 on my super cob who was a star all week!

Overall cannot forget about all the amazing experiences I had in 2022 here are just a few more: Combined training dressage of 67.6 and 2 poles (told you he wasn’t very careful ��) came 4th. Clear round 80cm at golden cross 10th. Arena xc lesson with Anna, many rallies with Alex, pc area dressage 61.8, training for area sj at Judi’s, area sj and much much more!

As you can tell we have had a very busy 2022. Im exited to see what 2023 will bring. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.

UPDATE: Equine Influenza Vaccine Shortage

The Pony Club has been in discussion with fellow Members of the BEF and have worked on a joint approach to issues with the distribution of equine influenza doses (flu vacc) by Boehringer.

Please read the advice document via the link below carefully.

The Pony Club supports the effort to alleviate pressure on vaccine supply and is in agreement with the approach for general leisure horses at lower risk to defer the annual booster injection from 12 months to 15 months in consultation with their vet. The vet should sign and date the passport appropriately. If the booster is deferred, the subsequent booster must be within 9 months in order to maintain the 2 injections within 2 years protocol.

The "within 6 months +21 days" has been temporarily suspended by BEF Member bodies, for The Pony Club, this requirement is for horses and ponies competing at the Spring Festival final and the summer Area competitions and Championships so is currently unaffected.

The shortage is likely to be for a few weeks this autumn.

Members who affiliate or compete with other organisations such as the BHA, Olympic disciplines or have international aspirations to compete under FEI rules are strongly advised to stay within the 12-month vaccination requirement or be at risk of restarting. The BEF is working closely with venues such as racecourses that are used by Members and will provide further information regarding their acceptance of the 15 month interval.

An Evening with Alycia Port

Date: Thursday 18th August, 6-7pm.

Location: Lockskinners Equestrian, TN8 7NA.

Alycia Port will be talking about how to get into Eventing and how to progress up the levels within the sport. There will be an opportunity at the end to ask any questions to Alycia. This is perfect for any keen rider looking at starting Eventing or those who are already Eventing and wanting to step up a level or wishing to start British Eventing.

Easter Extravaganza 2022

Hello ESPC family & friends

Wasn’t it fantastic being able to get out and about with just minor covid considerations over the 2022 Easter break

We kick started Easter with over fifty members attending our second Working Rally of the year. The wet weather didn’t dampen spirits with members and parents coming together to enjoy all things horsey. Apologies to those members still at school & college. Our next rally will be held at Montague, your Spring/Summer Pony Club venue, on Wednesday 1st June during half term.

ESPC training opportunities were abundant. There was Event training at Comphurst, Dressage at Pine Tree Farm, Judi Piper held a busy 80+ SJ training, and we had the Easter themed Funday at Crockstead this weekend.

Rebecca continued with her C+ and B group Stable Management sessions and the introduction of the eagerly awaited C training didn’t disappoint with not one but two, day long sessions entertaining members at Mayflower House. Our advanced Test candidates participated in an Area run program which included lunge test training and B Test guidance. Duncan Morgan was asked to be ride demonstrator of good practice for assessors at a B+ assessment training day, high praise of his riding technique.

Our members also had inter-branch Area training opportunities with SJ at Felbridge, Mounted Games at Sands Farm and TET XC at South Brockwells.

Many members put their skills to the test competing;

Huge congratulations to Coco Isaac and Sophia Chambers for being victorious at two rounds of Area competitions earning the opportunity to represent Area 11 at the Pony Club BAH National Spring Championships hosted at Arena Uk Sophia and Fancy came a very respectable 12th in their Novice dressage section. Coco had phenomenal success qualifying for four classes with her two awesome ponies - 80cm arena eventing with Tommy and 90cm and 1m show jumping with both Tommy and Rose, Congratulations Sophia and Coco amazing personal achievements and your Branch is very proud of you.
Special mention to Coco and Lula Isaac who both had podium finishes at Area 11 TRI to qualify for the National Winter Triathlon Championships held in Nottinghamshire on 27th March. Coco finished 34th Junior (14yr and under) and Lula 33rd Open section against members 25yrs and under. Both marvellous achievements against top national competitors.
Coco has been invited by the TET committee to represent the South of England at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May, a unique opportunity and fabulous achievement, congratulations.
Lots of ESPC members represented our Branch at three InterBranch competitions - Combined Training hosted by Eridge PC, Show Jumping hosted by Romney Marsh PC and TET & TRI hosted by East Kent. Congratulations to the many ESPC members who were placed or who achieved personal bests at these PC competitions.

Our attention now turnings toward the once a year Area 11 competitions in Dressage (Walk & trot up to Open test), Show Jumping and Eventing (80cm to110cm) and Tetrathlon (Junior to Open) Reward for a top placing at Area is qualification to the prestigious Pony Club Championships in August. To have reached the standard to be able to enter Area deserves high praise and recognition, a wonderful achievement in itself. Such things don’t happen without commitment and drive so dream big, plan your journey and sign up for our training opportunities over the coming months.

Enormous thanks to the volunteer discipline heads who work tirelessly organising opportunities and events for the benefit of our members, young and old and to the special parents whose daily commitment behind the scenes keep the business side of the Branch running - Helen our treasurer, Sonja our Website host, Jane our Facebook administrator, Amanda our Membership secretary and Becky our Safeguarding Officer. Many will be available for you to ask questions and thank in person at the Branch BBQ & Prize Evening on Friday 13th May at Montague.

Advanced Riding Sessions

We have organised some riding sessions aimed at members working towards the C+ test and above, ensuring we are also catering for our older members as well as young!

These sessions will be looking at gaining some better understanding of the scales of training and how they relate to our daily riding.

The first session on the 22nd April will be at Anna’s yard & will focus on flatwork up to elementary where Anna will explain and demonstrate the lateral movements required at this level to give a true understanding of what we are aiming for & how to ask for it! There will then be a ridden session to have a go yourselves.

More sessions to come for both showjumping and cross country.

This is a great opportunity to train with Anna Hanson BHS Stage 5 rider & ex advanced Eventer. She has also ridden at national dressage finals.

Location: Plum Hill Farm, Stunts Green, Herstmonceux, Hailsham, East Sussex, BN27 4PN.

Important Update to the Stirrup Rule

Dear Members, Parents, Volunteers and Officials,

Please see below an important update to the stirrup rule from Pony Club head office, which comes into effect immediately. If you have any queries regarding the revised rule please contact them directly on: enquiries@pcuk.org

Stirrups

Stirrups should be of the correct size to suit the rider’s boots. They must have 7mm (¼”) clearance on either side of the boot. To find this measurement, tack checkers should move the foot across to one side of the stirrup, with the widest part of the foot on the tread. From the side of the boot to the edge of the stirrup should not be less than 14mm.

There are now many types of stirrups marketed as ‘safety stirrups’. All riders must ensure that their stirrups are suitable for the type of footwear they are wearing and the activities in which they are taking part and that the stirrup leathers are in good condition.

There are no prescribed weight limits on metal stirrups, however with the advent of stirrups of other materials, weight limits are seen to be given by manufacturers. Any person buying these stirrups, should take particular notice if weight limits are on the box or attached information leaflets. Neither the feet nor the stirrup leathers or irons, may be attached to the girth, or the feet attached to the stirrup irons.

It is strongly recommended that the design of the stirrup chosen allows the foot to be released easily in the event of a rider fall. Specific rules for individual sports can be found in the respective sports rulebooks.

Particular focus should be on ensuring that the boot and stirrup are the correct size for the rider taking part and used in line with the manufacturer's guidance.

For the avoidance of doubt, at Pony Club events. stirrups which connect the boot and the stirrup magnetically are not allowed Interlocking boot soles and stirrup Treads are not allowed.

Mounted Games

Bostock & Free Jump stirrups are not allowed at Pony Club Mounted Games events.

Stirrups which include Metal/ Metal type treads, including but not limited to those with protruding spikes and / or perforated grip features are NOT Permitted.

‘British Equestrians for Ukraine’ launched

Leading organisations and individuals across Britain’s equestrian community have united to form ‘British Equestrians for Ukraine’ which aims to help horses and their owners caught up in the crisis created by the Russian invasion. The Ukrainian Equestrian Federation has put out an urgent call for supplies on the ground including feed, forage and shavings and with a groundswell of support from our industry, there was a clear need to help co-ordinate the offers of assistance from leading brands as well as raise money to fund aid directly where it’s needed most.

Spearheaded by British Equestrian (BEF), The British Horse Society (BHS), the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) and World Horse Welfare with the support of member bodies across the industry, British Equestrians for Ukraine has been set up to help facilitate a supply chain to meet the immediate need for goods on the ground as well as raising money to help purchase supplies and cover the costs associated with transport.

Inter-branch Mounted Games Training Day

Open to all Area 11 Branches

Calling all budding mounted games riders from tiny tots on lead rein to experienced competition riders.

A single coaching session for lead rein & assisted riders.

Two sessions with a break in between for Junior and Senior riders.

Session one will give coaching and practice time of at least six different races
Session two will be a friendly "race off" session giving riders an opportunity to try out their skills against pairs/teams of a similar ability.

Parents, coordinators and coaches can find out about the duties of the arena party and line stewards - an essential part of Mounted Games training and competitions.

A fun "on foot" session for Centre/Branch members who’s ponies/horses are unavailable.

The area quiz is on Sunday 27th February 2022, 1.30 - 4.30pm at Felbridge Village Hall, 49 Crawley Down Rd, Felbridge, RH19 2NT.

I hope you enjoyed reading about some of the year’s highlights in the e-newsletter sent out on the 23rd of December to all parent emails (as detailed on the PC database) - you can also read it on the website under the Newsletter tab. Hopefully it inspires you to be actively involved in the Branch this year.

We are working hard to ensure the coming year is packed full of lots and lots of opportunities. Lets make ESPC the perfect place to embrace everything equestrian. I’m so proud of all we achieved in 2021, we can't wait to go bigger and better in 2022.

What a year!

What a year I have had competing for the ESPC!

At the beginning of 2021 I set out with a goal to Event my little horse Paddy, and safe to say what a season it has been! At the start of June I had a go at my first ever Dressage test at Hickstead, coming away with a 7th and qualifying for Champs! Then going onto Area Eventing at Brightling we got double clears and a 32 Dressage placing 4th and also qualifying for Champs, which was my main goal of the season and I was over the moon knowing I was off 5 hours up the road not only for the Dressage but sleeping over for the Eventing the next day too! Then a week later me, Daisy, Bea and Lilli were off to Area Show Jumping at Felbridge. Legend Pads went clear and team placed 5th with another qualifier for Champs!

The Champs was an absolute blast with parents getting drunk on the first night relived after getting us kids and ponies there safe and sound after a long day travelling. Saturday I had a pole in the first round of SJ and safe clear in the second but unfortunately the team didn’t make it through to the third round. Pads performed a nice test for our Individual Dressage in the afternoon, he is not your pony version of Valegro tho, so we came away without a place. Eventing day Pads managed to pull out his best test of the year, just a shame nerves got the best of me resulting in me forgetting a movement picking up 2 penalties.

Flying round of SJ just to tap a pole, and king of Cross Country flies round a course causing many problems all day, two seconds over the allowed time, pushing us into the placings winning a 10th rosette! I had an amazing weekend for my first stay away with my Pony Club mates, with some good laughs and I 100% recommend Grassroots for anyone who wants to give it a go!

Thank you ESPC for helping me out throughout the summer, with improving my accuracy in the Dressage arena, my strides in the Show Jumping ring and my confidence on the Cross Country course. And of course Pads who is now off to teach my brother the ropes on his next adventure. So if you see an 11 year old boy being cantered off with round the ring trying to remember a course of 12 60cm jumps, don’t panic, its only Paddy. :)

It has been a relief to be able to start clinics and competitions again and this has led to a busy year for our Senior Show Jumpers. We have held lots of clinics with fantastic instructors, including Judy Piper-Dadswell at her fabulous facility at Starnash Farm, we had some great training from Penny Sangster at Crockstead Equestrian Centre and a brilliant day with Sam Penn, who taught nearly all day long. A fantastic variety to give all our members jumping at 80 and above access to some really experienced instructors!

A good number of our members have also been out representing East Sussex Pony Club at local branch competitions, Area and Regional Championships.

SDHEPC Show Jumping Competition

More recently we also had two fantastic wins at the South Down Hunt East Pony Club’s Show Jumping competition at Golden Cross. Meg Lillicrap, on her brand new pony, Poppy Hunt and Evelyn Dzogan won the 80 Class and Daisy Burgess, Lily Hunt, Hebe Warren and Darcey Byrne won the 90 class.

It is wonderful to see so many of our more senior members involved with everything the show jumping discipline has to offer.

As Training Organiser it is a privilege to watch our members progress with their ponies, to develop relationships with their fellow members and to have fun together. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to attend the regional finals, and all our members tried their hardest, overcame fears and setbacks and although we were not in the placings this year, everyone had fun and wonderful memories were made.

Senior Camp - year highlight

Following months of uncertainty we were relieved and delighted to get the green light from Pony Club head office for our residential camp to go ahead. Forty two campers and their beloved mounts descended on Ardingly’s event centre on Monday 5th August. For six days and five nights we came together to enjoy all things equestrian thanks to two Dc’s, five house keepers, five yard girls, seven coaches and an army of parent kitchen helpers. For the fourth year running we joined forces with Old Surrey & Burstow PC. Unfortunately our friends from the Cayman Islands PC were unable to join us this time due to uncertainty surrounding international travel.

Once again the British weather played havoc with our timetable however our enthusiasm was never dampened and campers embraced the necessary changes with resilience and enthusiasm. As well as busy riding days we had lovely sociable evenings - Monday we settled in and got to know each other, Tuesday we watched a musical ride demonstration by ESPC coach Alex Chambers and her competition partner Summer followed by lots of laughter during team games, Wednesday we enjoyed a wonderful sunset hound exercise with Old Surrey & Burstow Hunt, Thursday having been battered by wind and rain for much of the day we were thankful to be inside for TET shooting expertly hosted by Peter and Georgina Morgan. Thankfully the sun returned on Friday and having watched, over three days, the one thousand foot inflatable labyrinth and fun fair being set up we enjoyed all the thrills of the fair followed by Prize Evening were we recognised a variety of camp achievements. Saturday sadly saw the return of driving rain so our camp finale did not reflect the time and effort campers had put into their parent displays. Despite the weather it provided a whole camp opportunity to all be together, appreciate being reunited with family and reflect on our amazing week.

During the day campers enjoyed group tuition across various disciplines, stable management and a jumping competition tested their nerves. Sadly the eagerly awaited photo session had to be cut short much to everyone’s disappointment. Hooves To Hounds' Andie and her dedicated team endured horizontal rain and ever increasing wind to get some lovely shots before we had to admit defeat.

As camp coordinator it was a privilege to spend quality time with members and the camp team, to have fun together, watch friendships blossom, celebrate their achievements and support each other through the occasional low. It was lovely to enjoy the summer sunshine, hear laughter during team games and share the joy of campers being able to “just be kids” after what has been an unprecedented time of isolation and restriction.

Sincere thanks to all the parents for going the extra mile, supporting all the extra chores necessary for camp to run - completing all the necessary compliance forms, providing the long list of camp and pony necessities, transporting from Montague to Ardingly (and back again!) enough equipment for seven ride groups - dressage boards, rope & markers, a whole show jumping and working hunter course, XC flags, grid equipment plus everything required to run the kitchen, assisting our housekeeping team deep clean the kitchen before and again after camp, to provide over sixty meals four times a day, hosting evening activities and of course supporting your children so they can enjoy everything camp offers - friendship, horsemanship and this year more than ever, togetherness. We couldn’t do it without team work and sacrifice therefore a huge thank you for all the help, small and large, it all made for a great, much needed camp.

Pippa's Pony Club Camp

Going to Pony Club camp is my favourite week in the whole year, meeting old and new friends with our ponies and gaining more confidence every year.

In my first year I was nicknamed Velcro bum, as I sat every buck, bolt and rear!!! My pony was being so naughty I wanted to stop, but every one kept encouraging me, I stuck with it and never gave up. The Pony Club has taught me so much. Lots of tricks, warm ups and ways to control our ponies and be better riders.

I loved lunch times, having fun with my friends and swimming in the pool. Even during COVID we had water fights on hot days.

Every year I look forward to camp, fun, friends and learning new things.

Perfect Pete

What a year it has been for Perfect Pete. He started 2021 with a bout of arthritis so severe that we thought his ridden career was over. But he recovered with a lot of care and attention and in May Mathilda and Pete entered the regional grassroots qualifier competition at Hickstead doing their first ever dressage competition and he qualified for the championships at the grand old age of 34. He didn’t get placed but did very well at the Champs in August considering Mathilda was one of the youngest there and he was no doubt the oldest!

In July he went to junior camp and he and Mathilda were in the winning team and he has had success at Mounted Games too. He won reserve Champion at Rye Show in August too and although diagnosed with cushings in October is still raring to go. Sadly Mathilda has largely outgrown him but we have another little girl who he is teaching to ride.

Due to his great age and qualification he went on to be featured in both Horse and Hound and Southern Horse magazine. No one is exactly sure of his age but we had confirmation that he was at least 34 at the Championships from a previous owner from 25 years ago who got in touch having seen the article in Horse and hound and who was an official at the champs. She told us that her daughter (now in her 30s) was unbeaten on Pete in dressage. She also told us about his previous owners and that he came from the master of the Heythrop Hunt as a baby. So we have traced his lineage almost right back to the start.

He has inspired at least 5 children to become great equestrians including a national hunt jockey and a leading eventer. He has made Mathilda a stronger, bolder, more confident better rider. He is a true Pony Club Legend. But he is still very cheeky and well known for his naughty traits. Mathilda wrote a poem about him during lockdown last year in a competition run by Pippa Funnell and she was chosen as a winner and William Fox-Pitt read it out online.

It tells just how cheeky he can be. We hope you’ll continue to see him being cheeky at Pony Club for a long time to come. READ IT HERE

My Pony Club Journey

I started my Pony Club adventure 13 years ago at the age of 6 with my (what we think was) Shetland pony ‘Buttons’. He saw me attend my first Mini Camp and gave me my first taste of Pony Club fun. Little did I know I was meeting friends whom I would still have today and undoubtedly for life.

Following in the hoof prints of Buttons was Spritely a sweet, rather cheeky Dartmoor. I am sure there are a couple of instructors who can remember him for all the wrong reasons!

By the time Spritely went to entertain another Pony Club I was 9 and my mum was at this point adamant that I entered into the world of dressage which would give me a good grounding and hopefully help me in the future. Along came ‘Boy’ a 13hh Welsh X who knew the trade. He allowed me to venture up to the PC Dressage Championship at Kelsall Hill in Cheshire in 2013. He was an out and out dressage pony and had little desire to leave the ground - resulting in me going straight over his ears on several occasions when I tried to convince him otherwise. None of this mattered as I was so fortunate to be able to have Basil, the ultimate Pony Club pony whom I still have today. He took me everywhere from Camps and Rallies to PC Tests and ultimately started my Eventing career (in other words my poor mum’s sleepless nights and nightmares filled with XC start boxes began).

By now I’m 12 and looking pretty tall on dear Basil who’s reins were handed to my brother. This was a short lived relationship as he decided he wanted to swap this dream boat for a motocross bike! However we couldn’t bear to part with him, so he went on loan to our neighbours where he is still enjoying life today.

Our next addition was an unbacked 15hh Connie straight from Ireland. Her name was Lottie. So 12yr old me and 4yr old Lottie began our very green journey together, learning more than I could ever have imagined. Four years down the line and I had completed my C+, B test and been to the PC Championships three times - 2017 being the most memorable when we won individually in the Eventing. She is still with me after enjoying many days of BE.

At this point I have once again reached the difficult time of outgrowing a wonderful partner hence the arrival in 2018 of a rather large Irish youngster who goes by the name of George. We developed our partnership and set off together. George has since taken me round my first BE Novice and qualified for the PC Open 110 Championships where we flew round our first 2* course.

Being a member of the Pony Club has taught me so many lessons and that’s not just on the ponies. I’ve learned to take the good times with the bad and how much good a day with friends and their ponies can do for you. I’m thankful to each and every pony, friend and instructor who has made my Pony Club days the best and given me unforgettable memories. Long may it continue!

Area Dressage by Calista Scott-Smith

For Area Dressage we had to go to Hickstead. I had to do lots of things to do to get ready for the event as this was the first time I had done Dressage in a competition. First, I had to learn the test! I had lots of lessons to help me.

On Saturday morning we gave Secret a great big bath and trimmed up all her little feathers and made her mane neat, trimmed her tail up. We wanted to make her all shiny and clean and she really did shine!

When we got to Hickstead, first we went in the warm-up arena, and we did a walk, trot and canter on both reigns. Then we did some 20 metre circles and trotting down the centre line until our number was called to go up to the main arena. This was where we did our dressage test, we did a few tiny wrong parts in the test but it didn't matter and the Judge really liked Secret and she gave me some really nice feedback.

I managed to come 18th in my arena. There was over 75 entries in the Grassroots class. Secret was very good and at the end she had a big treat and a cuddle - then we loaded her up in the trailer and we left to come home. When we got back home we turned Secret out in the field with her friends. Then we put the trailer away and went home for dinner!

I had a nice bath and then my brother went to bed, I got some time to watch TV but then I was super tired from the busy day and went upstairs to bed.

I cant wait to do another dressage test again soon!

Mounted Games - it’s great to be back!

It has been fantastic returning to mounted games after the restrictions of 2020. It saddened me that after all their hard work our seniors were robbed of their competition glory days due to lockdown however it’s been lovely seeing them move onto horses and seeing their progress this summer. I know they will have amazing achievements next season as they are all dedicated and not afraid of hard work. Keep up the great work Reuben, Izzy, Lola and Olivia.

I have been thrilled to introduce members of all ages to the joys of mounted games at our Montague summer rallies and also winter training at Golden Cross. The season has drawn to an end with old established partnerships and newly formed ones having great fun riding at the winter pairs inter branch competitions held indoors at Bodiam. Eight Pony Club branches enjoyed coming together for the festive themed fancy dress finale held on Dec 5th. Congratulations to the following members for taking part plus special thanks to Jane, Nicky P, Rosie, Nicky W, Nicol and Megan for giving up their time so it could happen not once but three times! Well done all.

Mini’s

Alice & Connie rode into first place in the October lead rein section -congratulations!
Amelie May & William - William rode independently and was a supportive partner for May as this was her first competition and only her third time doing games - you were both awesome!
Florence & Hetty finished with a win in their festive finale after a nail biting last race earned them victory by one point - fantastic riding girls!
Connie & Millie were so excited to be doing Winter Pairs together again - they definitely had fun and have bright mounted games futures.
Henry & Natalie took the plunge to ride independently in Oct, they rode into second place. Keep up the excellent work.
Henry & Oliver - Henry partnered a boy from Staff College PC in Nov and Dec. They both rode independently and really enjoyed being team mates. Henry’s deserves a special mention for his calm approach - even when Polly got excited he stayed calm and reassured her.

Juniors

Dakota & Mattie rode to first place in both their finals, an awesome achievement. Perfect Pete once again lived up to his name and didn’t put a hoof wrong for Mattie. Dakota and Smurf added another string to their bow - Dakota kept a calm head to navigate Smurf through the races, which they both loved.
Sophia & Freddie returned for their third WP series together. This was their first try at juniors, a big step up. All looks promising for an Area debut in the new season.
Congratulations everyone, you were awesome!

Games is a fun and invigorating team activity and it’s a great time to get involved, not least because East Sussex are hosting the Area Competition at Montague this Spring on Sunday May 22nd 2022 - SAVE THE DATE PLEASE EVERYONE . Plans are already in full swing to provide members across Area 11 opportunities to enjoy the thrill of games. With many ESPC members demonstrating enthusiasm for games a team entry at Area games next Spring could become a reality.

Mini Camp '21 by Ethan

I was the only boy at Mini Camp this year, but it meant I made lots of new friends and had loads of fun. It was the first camp with my new pony, Goldie, and we got to try lots of new things together as she is only young like me.

We got split into different groups and each did different things, the first day we did cross country and show jumping in the morning, and then we got to go swimming in the outdoor pool, which I loved. After lunch, it was really interesting as we had a vet talk and got to see inside a horses leg!

The second day was really windy and the jumps in our gridwork lesson kept blowing down, but it was still great fun. Even though it had also turned really cold, we all still went swimming after our final lesson, which was dressage, it was so windy by then we could dry my swim shorts from the trailer!

After lunch we had prize giving, where we all dressed up smart. I was very happy as I won the most improved rider award. Camp was really fun, its hard to say what I liked best as I loved the riding, swimming, tuck shop, and my instructor, Tori.. Oh and my pony of course!

My Champs Journey

Qualifying for the champs was so much fun, I had an amazing time at Hickstead doing two lovely tests on my awesome ponies, Treacle and Alfie. I love going to Hickstead as it is such a wonderful venue. It was great to be out and about after lockdown and to see so many of our pony club members. Both ponies did an amazing test which helped me qualify for the regional championships.

Then off to Cambridge we went for the regional championships. As we had a space in the lorry we had room for Perfect Pete to travel up with us as Matilda had also qualified for the Champs. It was also very exciting because it was my first stay away show, so I got to pack out the lorry and get it all ready.

Alfie settled in to his temporary stable like a pro which made me feel more relax because it made me feel he had done it before and he knew his job. After we got Alf settled, I walked the show jumping with my other team members.

On Saturday it was time for dressage and once again the amazing Alf pulled it out the bag with a 69.17% where we came 6th out of a huge section. Bea and I loved going to fill up our water buckets – which ended up in a water fight!

Then on the Sunday we had the eventing, and had a great start with a dressage score of 29.2. Next was the show jumping, and we got a clear round! Lastly was the cross country which is my favourite part. When I walked the cross-country course the fence I was a bit worried about the Trakehner but Alfie flew over it and jumped an amazing clear round. Finishing 4th .

I feel so lucky to be part of such a fab pony club.

ESPC at Pony Club Champs 2021

Congratulations to all those that qualified and competed at the 2021 Pony Club Championships!

We started with representation in the Tetrathlon with a Junior Girls team of Lola Woollard, Lula and Coco Isaac who did amazingly well to take Team 6th - Lola did a cracking clear round on a tough cross country course.

In the Intermediates we had Cora Taylor and Duncan Morgan, both had been at the Senior International Tetrathlon the weekend before and for Cora and Vincent it was a run too soon, Duncan and TJ took 12th in their class.

All partied hard in true Tetrathlon style, the theme was The Olympics as probably difficult to tell from the photos! Tolly and Georgina provided important support to our hard working competitors.

As our TET members headed back to Sussex Evelyn Dzogan headed to Offchurch for the Novice Dressage where she did a fabulous test for 66.67%. We arrived to see them go and I hope inspired to qualify next year, with a team would be better still. Well done Evelyn, Miranda and Purdy!

Duncan and Lux had Open show jumping on the Wednesday after a disappointing first round of 12 Lux jumped clear in the second round that stood at 1.20m ! They were then asked to join Crawley and Horsham to make a mixed Area 11 Open team the next day.

That afternoon Fleur Jeffrey's arrived for the Individual 90 Eventing and the rest of the Open Dressage team , Katie Hipkins, Tia and Kiera Whiteman. Fleur did her dressage test that afternoon. Offchurch had 6 arenas going at once and a massive warm up area the other side of the road that ran through the park with 3 show jumping and warm up arenas at the end, it all looked very impressive as you walked through from the stabling and camping area, fortunately they ran buggy's that you could jump on if room to catch a ride down, certainly our number of steps rose rapidly whilst there!

The next morning the dressage team were some of the first on, Katie's horse was in an arena next to the cross country and found it all too much, Lux got a fly in his ear and ended up with very erratic scores as a result! Kiera and Tia both put in strong performances always difficult when you are early on, the overall team position was disappointing but who knows what next year will bring. Lux went on to jump 2 rounds finishing on 4 faults with team taking 10th place in the Open team competition.

That afternoon Fleur jumped for a lovely clear show jumping and then went cross country, a tricky combination resulted in penalties but they flew round the rest of a challenging championship course and should be very proud of what they achieved.

Duncan and Lux were lucky enough to secure a 100 Eventing place on the back of his qualification in 2019, thank goodness for TET friends as we would have felt like Billy-no-mates with everyone else heading back to Sussex, I don't think I ever saw Duncan on his own, another shameless plug for TET. So Friday afternoon Lux put in the dressage performance we knew he had in him 24.2, whether it was the fact he had a large audience to perform too who knows, as a result he lead his arena.

The next day was Show Jumping and he touched a pole, Cross Country is where he is least experienced and this was to show with one stop taking him off a podium finish . This is not a plug for Duncan but his rounds and others are on Equireel on Facebook and they give you an idea of what the courses were like for both Tetrathlon and the 90 and 100 Eventing, especially for those thinking of moving up next year, please have a chat with anyone who was there as they all walked the cross country, it would be lovely to get more East Sussex members up there and to experience a Pony Club Championship for any of the disciplines.

I should add Dressage to Music, Mounted Games, Polo Cross and Polo teams were all competing too so certainly added to the atmosphere.

Thank you Pony Club and fingers crossed we can get there again next year .

Emily's Summer

I started off the summer with my mare Limit, who I’ve had in pony club for the past 4 years. It was probably going to be our last proper summer as a pair as we’d decided the following year we’d take things slower as Limit is getting older, but it had started amazingly! We had won a pairs 85cm show jumping with Kyla and Buckley, we’d got 3rd at Petley Wood Show jumping and 10th at Chilham Hunter trial and had starting training for my c+ test at the end of the summer. We both were having probably the best summer we’ve had in a long time. But unfortunately a month before senior camp Limit strained a tendon. I was gutted as I knew that would mean our summer plans were over and Limit wouldn’t be able to come to our first and last senior camp together.

For a couple weeks I went with my friend Beth and rode one of her ponies on the downs which was great fun, I usually was either being pulled into a gallop or attempting to gallop! I also went to groom at a couple shows with them and at pony club summer rallies I went along on foot to help and keep up with my C+ stable management training. But I couldn’t help thinking that I wouldn’t be able to take my C+ test or go to camp.

However, with thanks to the Morgan family, I was lucky enough to be offered one of their horses, Jackson, to use for my training and then they said I was able to take him to camp!

After a week at camp I was quite worried, because I knew I loved this horse! He really was the best horse I could’ve borrowed, we did everything together and he made the week at camp so worth while.

After returning from camp we dropped Jackson back to his home, I was very lucky and Lucinda said I could carry on using him to take my C+ test. Georgina hacked out with me and helped me lots. I loved my time with Jackson and then we got the most generous offer …. The Morgan family said I could loan Jackson long term as they saw how much fun he had had at camp!

We had to build him a stable so he stayed at his home for a few weeks but I rode him and took him to training days and then we did our C+ test. Even though he pulled a shoe off half way through the show jumping part of the test, he behaved his best and we passed which I was over the moon with.

Jackson then came to live ours and definitely made himself at home! We did a hunter trail and came 5th in the pairs with Beth and I’d like start hunting with Coakham Bloodhounds this winter as this was Jackson’s favourite thing to do with Angus. I’m beyond happy and grateful to have this very talented and loving horse who constantly keeps me entertained in so many ways.

I can’t wait for next season with Jackson and the Pony Club, hopefully competing at some qualifiers and maybe try for champs! As well as starting my training for my B-Test.

Thank you to everyone who’s let me borrow their ponies and have fun on this summer and especially the Morgan family who made it possible for me to do my C+test and senior camp and letting me get to know and ride the legend of a horse that Jackson is.

It’s definitely one summer I’ll remember!

In Pony Club, it’s never the end of the world when things go wrong as there’s usually some pretty awesome people to help out.

'E' Test to 'A' Test

I joined East Sussex Pony Club as soon as I turned 4, which in those days was the youngest you could be, having watched Angus (my big brother) at fun days I was desperate to join in and start to collect the mini badges that they worked on. E test was followed by D and D+, then whilst working towards my C test we were on our way back from a cross country clinic, when we saw Francis Whittington in the service station, Fabbes was with us and she told me to go and ask him for his autograph, he wrote this note for me which has helped inspire me to do just that go all the way to A, thank you Francis for the inspiration.

We are very lucky in our Club/ Area to have some amazing instructor's and a full calendar of clinics, as soon as I passed one test I started attending clinics for the next even though it was going to be 2 years before I would sit the test, Penny Sangster always said you could never start early enough and it was steady improvement and knowledge that you needed, I like to think I proved her right . Also there is nothing better than being out on your pony with your friends learning to improve your riding and their way of going after all Pony Club friends are the best.

Pony Club has given me some amazing opportunities along the way and friends all over the country, I have been fortunate to represent the Club at Champs for Mounted Games, Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing and Tetrathlon, I have show jumped at Royal Windsor and represented Southern England at Tetrathlon, all whilst working towards my A test so it does not need to be all hard work ! Now I plan to start coaching and hoping to help others achieve .

Inclusivity is an important part of the Pony Club ethos, and we encourage members who may have a disability or difficulty to complete a Reasonable Adjustment Plan that enables the member to partake in our activities as fully and safely as possible.

Particularly helpful prior to taking a Pony Club Test or competition, a plan enables fair access for the member and clear understanding of the candidate and any additional support they might need, for the examiner. Our Area Rep Abby Bernard has been a driving force implementing Reasonable Adjustment plans across Pony Club.

NEW CLINIC: Ready, Steady, Jump

Huge congratulations to East Sussex member, Duncan Morgan, who has passed his A Test.

The A Test is the highest award of The Pony Club, and provides a comprehensive assessment of Horsemanship and Training of Young Horses.

Duncan, who is only 18, has been a very active member of our Branch since he was 5 and over the years has competed to a very high standard in Tetrathlon, Show Jumping, Eventing, Dressage and Mounted Games, representing our Branch on numerous occasions and qualifying in all these disciplines for Championships - an amazing achievement.

He has worked incredibly hard for this and we are very proud of him!

ESPC at Romney Marsh Mini ODE

So the weather decided to give us a super dose of sunshine for many of our younger members first ODE! this made for optimal, but if a little warm conditions! Particularly for those doing the dry Tri!

Feedback has been that it was a lovely friendly event for our members to be part of and lots of our branch representing at different levels!

In class 1: Hetty Roddis 2nd and Henry Roberts 4th. Connie Roberts picking up 4th in the other section! Well done to them all!

In the 40cm class - assisted: Natalie Little scooped up 2nd place and Darcey Cole 10th (a new riding combination for Darcey and Max) and for both girls their first ever ODE. Well done girls!

40cm - unassisted: Calista Scott-Smith 1st in her section on her ODE debut and picked up 5th in the Dry Triathlon as well.

50cm: Aimee Novell and Forest picking up a lovely 2nd place - (in her & Forest’s first ODE)

60cm: Darcie came 1st on Rupert. It was also their first ODE together and she was the youngest in the class!

60 Dry Tri: Dakota Kane took part, but some mistakes with RMPC loosing her shoot score has meant placings not really meaningful, but she has used it as a fab training session! Lovely clear XC and run in the heat! Well done!

70cm: Sophie Novell on Gus placed 4th (first ODE for this combo)! and Poppy Hunt on Alf picking up 6th!

Dry Tri Beanies: Ethan Joyce stormed round to pick up a fantastic 3rd place!

Beanies Biathlon: Tolley came in 1st

I think you will all agree these are superb results from a really enjoyable day!

Area 11 Horse & Pony Care Competition

On the 11th September the annual Blue Cross Horse & Pony Care Competition is taking place at Cissbury Estate, Worthing, BN14 0SR.

This is a chance for members to show off the knowledge they’ve gained during badge sessions, stable management and other training.

Working in teams for 4, participants make their way around different ‘stations’, each of which will comprise of a different theory or practical based topics. Members are asked a series of questions marked by the Assessors.

I’m sure members that have taken part previously would agree it’s a fun day out, a chance to see your pony club friends and all without needing to bring a pony! Even more excitingly, it’s a chance to qualify for the Championships!

I’d like to find out who would be interested. We are looking for members of all ages as there are mini, junior and senior teams. It would be great for our Pony Club to have teams representing at each level!

Road Rider (and Mini) Training & Tests

Road Rider & Mini Road Rider Achievement Badge

We will be holding Mini Road Rider and Road Rider Achievement Badge training and Tests in August 2021.

Road Rider: Aimed at members who have already achieved their D+, and are training towards their C. The badge is a prerequisite before the C test . The theory training will be 1.5hrs via Zoom on Thursday 26th August, the Practical Training and Test will be held on Saturday 28th August at the PC Field, Montague, Hankham, BN24 5AL and will be approx. 2.5hrs, You must commit to both sessions at the time of booking.

Total cost for both sessions is £25.50 per member.

D/D+ Test 'Mop Up' Day

I have noticed that we have lots of older members that have not yet started their efficiency tests…

Therefore, I am planning to do a ‘Mop Up’ Day on Saturday 10th July at Montague (Hankham, BN24 5AL), specifically for those people.

We will cover the content of both the D and D+ so that your ready to start your C Training and C Test.

New Booking and Payment System from 1st July

Some of you may be aware that we have been working on a new booking/payment system. Following trials in recent weeks we have decided to roll it out to all rallies/clinics from 1 July .

Booking your place on a clinic/rally will now be done by accessing the calendar on the website and selecting the clinic you want to book on to, by using the drop down menu and clicking on ‘Bookings’ under Clinics & Events, or using the quick link on the homepage. In our trials members have found it an easy system to use and there are instructions on the Bookings page of the website should you need them. Please do take time to read the instructions and especially note that it is the member’s name that needs to go in the top fields not yours.

Payment will be taken at the time of booking and will be via PayPal. Don’t worry if you don’t have a PayPal account….if you scroll down the payment screen you will see the option to 'pay by credit or debit card'. We have opted for a system which doesn’t charge an additional booking fee as we want to minimise the cost to our members. As a branch we will cover the monthly cost of the operating the system. However, we have decided to increase the cost of all our clinics by 50p to cover the additional PayPal fees that we will be charged. This is in line with other local Pony Club branches.

Once you are booked on to a clinic you are committed to attend. If you find that you can no longer come along then please let your Discipline Head know in good time as they may have a waiting list. If your place can be filled then you may be entitled to a refund. If your space cannot be filled then I’m afraid there will be no refund as we will be committed to pay the venue and instructor and we have to cover our costs.

We are planning to open new clinics for booking once the Discipline Heads have confirmed they are ready to take bookings. It is anticipated that this will be once the current month’s clinic has taken place. This is so we don’t have multiple months open at any one time. However, some clinics will have multiple dates available eg. Summer Rallies, Test Training etc. so please double check the date before paying for your booking.

Bookings will close a week before the clinic/rally. This is to enable instructors and groups to be organised. In practise you will be able to book a space for a Saturday clinic up to and including the Sunday before. And for a Wednesday clinic up to and including the Thursday before. This does mean that you need to get organised and it may take a little getting used to.

If you find that you are too late to book in online you can contact the Discipline Head and they may be able to add you to their list if they have a space. Please don’t use this as a regular way of booking in though as it creates a lot more work for both the organiser and myself and so if it becomes a regular occurrence you will be turned away. Advanced payment will still be required by PayPal.

We have to restrict the numbers on certain clinics. The number of spaces available will be clearly shown when you start the booking process. Once you select the clinic and then click on the chosen date a box will pop up stating how many spaces are left. You can then choose to continue or select a different date or clinic.

To return to the list of available clinics you can click on the arrow to the right of the photo for that clinic.

If you find that there are no spaces left on your chosen clinic please contact the Discipline Head as usual and they may offer to add you to a waiting list.

When you have booked and paid for a clinic you will receive a confirmation email. Your Discipline Head will confirm your time slot once booking has closed and the groups have been allocated. You can add your booking to your diary from this confirmation email. I also believe that the system will email you nearer the time of your clinic to remind you.

Our clinics and rallies can only go ahead if we have enough people booked on to them. In very rare instances we may have to cancel clinics or modify the number of spaces available.

In summary all clinics/rallies from 1 July will be bookable online via the website only. Some clinics before this date will also use the new system but you will have been told if this is the case.

ESPC at Area Dressage 2021

What a fantastic day for East Sussex Pony Club! All the members were smartly dressed and showed the true meaning of team spirit.

The day started of at 8.30am with the ESPC Open Team. The team consisted of Duncan Morgan, Tia Whiteman, Kiera Whiteman and Katie Hipkins. They all produced lovely tests to come second as a team qualifying for the Championships in August. As well as this excellent result they all had brilliant individual results: Duncan 3rd, Tia 8th, Kiera 4th and Katie 4th in their respective arenas.

They then went on to the Intermediate where Megan Bassett competed as an Individual and produced a very nice test to come 14th.

We then had our Novice Team made up of Kayleigh Sandell, Georgina Morgan, Ruby Norman and Evelyn Dzogan who all did lovely tests to come 5th out of 17 teams. As well as brilliant Individual results: Kayleigh 5th, Georgina 9th, Ruby 18th and Evelyn 1st qualifying for the Championships in August.

The day swiftly moved onto the Grassroots where we had two Teams and an Individual. Amy Newton represented East Sussex in the Individuals and produced a good test to come 18th.

Our first Team made up of Lily Hunt, Lily Hunt, Mathilda Kirkman and Calista Scott-Smith who worked well as a team with beautiful tests for their first experience competing at Area to come 9th. Again with fabulous Individual results Lily 2nd on her first pony, Lily 6th on her second pony, Mathilda 4th all qualifying for Regionals and Calista 18th.

Onto our second Team made up of Megan Lilicrap, Daisy Burgess, Izzy Frame and Jess Perry. The Team produced lovely tests for a Team 7th. Individually Megan came 7th (qualifying for Regionals), Daisy 18th, Izzy 10th and Jess 7th (qualifying for Regionals).

An amazing day for East Sussex competing against others with very high standards. It was so nice to watch the teams having a great time and loving the experience. A huge well done to everyone! Best of luck to those competing in the Open and Novice in the Championships in August up in Warwickshire. Also to those competing in the Grassroots in the Regional Championship in August up in Horse Heath, Cambridge.

EHV-1 Update

Dear Parents & Members,

There has been an update to the Pony Club EHV-1 Protocols, details as follows:

While there continue to be infrequent outbreaks of EHV-1 with both respiratory and neurological signs in Europe and the UK, British Equestrian’s Equine Infectious Disease Advisory Group (EIDAG) has concluded that the prevalence of EHV-associated disease has returned to its typical background level.

Whilst biosecurity measures should continue to be maintained as standard best practice the additional level of activity can now revert to normal.

As good practice and as requested by the BEF, please continue to use the Equine Health Self Declaration forms for larger competitions where horses and ponies will be coming from a wider area.

Area Competitions - what are they?

Something to think about and aspire towards!

Area and Grassroot competitions give us the opportunity to represent East Sussex PC

against other Area 11 pony club teams in the disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping,

Eventing, Tetrathlon and Mounted Games (plus in Autumn Arena Eventing has been added).

Qualification for a converted place at PC championships is through these once a year Area

competitions.

These will soon be upon us! Our discipline heads will circulate the schedules when

available, the dates are already advertised on ESPC and Area 11 websites. Entries will

have to go in quickly so please register your interest with our discipline head NOW and

respond quickly as soon as is necessary.

When available please read the schedules carefully because:

- Some disciplines have age criteria (Tetrathlon and Mounted Games spring to mind).

- Previous competition experience may be a factor (for example, if you have ridden at Area

Open Dressage you cannot step back unless on a young horse).

- There may be specific tack requirements (for example snaffle bits only for mounted

games).

Our discipline heads will be happy to assist you deciding which class is best for you and

your horse/pony.

Also very importantly all ponies/horses need to have a valid flu vaccination within 6-

months of the Area competition - the first two jabs are a minimum requirement (can be

achieved in 29 days). Remember the horse/pony can not compete within 6 days after any

jab. Events held at some venues may be subject to additional rules.

To be eligible to ride at Area you will need to have attended three working rallies since July

last year (details how you achieve this are below).

The atmosphere at Area competitions is unique. For many it is their first experience of

formal competition whilst for others there is an expectation of securing a place at

championships. Without fail team work and the power of friendship comes to the forefront.

Area isn't always about how you do on the day, but instead is valued on the fact that you

made it there. Take pride in knowing that you are riding with the best in Area 11, you have

earned your place to be there so enjoy every minute. Good luck and please embrace the

experience whatever the result.

For the talented few, a ticket to Pony Club Championships is well deserved. This year PC

Champs are being held at Offchurch in Warwickshire, considerably closer than its previous

venue in Cheshire! Memories of attending Championships are priceless, the experience

offers so much more than just competing. I hope you are lucky enough to experience this

one day!

Please register your interest to compete at one or more Area competitions this June to July

TODAY!

How to rally-up for Area competitions:

For Area Competitions members are required to have demonstrated an interest in and

shown a com mitment to East Sussex Pony Club. Members must have attended a

minimum of three working rallies (since the 1st of July 2020) to be eligible to represent our

branch.

- Working Rallies are held during half-term and Easter break.

- Working Rallies are held each Wednesday- weather permitting once we are able to use

our Summer field at Montague.

- Camp (Boot, Senior or Junior) counts as one working rally.

- Regular attendance at a number of Test training clinics counts as one working rally if

authorised by the DC.

- When there is a jumping element (SJ/Eventing/TET) the combination of horse/pony and

rider must have attended at least one Pony Club jumping clinic which is authorised by the

DC as a "jumping working rally". This is a safety requirement.

- Normal training clinics do not count as a working rally. However, specialist Area clinics

pre authorised by the DC will count as one working rally.

- Those who are in work or further education (A levels and Uni) should contact the DC (in

good time before Area registration) to establish an acceptable rally requirement as we

appreciate it can be hard to rally up as detailed above.

Whatever level you are riding and training at I hope you have a happy and successful

season full of fun and laughter.

Dear Parents & Members,

I hope you are looking forward to getting out to some PC clinics with your horses and ponies over Easter. Please could you read the following important information very carefully. Sorry it's so long but needs must in the current situation.

Passports

Don't forget your pony's passport! We will be doing random spot tests for Equine Flu vaccinations. The 12-month booster is fine for training.

EHV-1

An Equine Health Status Declaration form needs to be completed 24 hours before you attend your first ESPC clinic. It can be done electronically HERE or by emailing the attached form to clare.espc@gmail.com Thereafter it is essential you carry out the self checks as detailed on the form. As we start the journey out of human lockdown, we do not want to see our equestrian sport locked down too.

COVID-19

Please do not attend if you or anyone in your family:

Have symptoms of COVID-19.
Have tested positive for Coronavirus in the past 10 days, or are required to self-isolate.
Only one person from the same household should be transporting their child and helping with loading, tacking up, etc. However, if you need to bring a driver because you are unable to, then this is acceptable as long as it is essential.
Other siblings or family members not involved in the lesson should not attend if possible.
Social distancing of 2m must be maintained by accompanying adults which can be reduced to 1m if you wear masks.
Please don't form a group of more than six.
PC Members should not wear masks when mounted.
Please allow 5-10m between vehicles when parking.
If possible please make arrangements to use toilet facilities in your horse transport vehicle.
Please bring your own hand sanitiser and masks.
It is the parent's responsibility to check the girth and tack.
Remember ...... ARRIVE......TRAIN.... LEAVE!

Open to all ages and abilities

If you haven’t been able to book into your favourite clinic or fancy something different then this clinic is for you. We have hired the outdoor arena at Golden Cross - what we do is down to you!

You might want to get together with some friends for an hour of "fabulous flatwork” or you might fancy some "clever clear round” jump coaching. Maybe you have a youngster or are a new combination and would like to just ride in a group to give them experience somewhere new. Maybe you fancy having a go at choreographing a formation ride? The jumps will be in the arena but we could still have some fun doing mounted games - get your thinking caps on, chat to your friends and get in touch

We are ever hopeful that we will be back to ‘normal’ in August and able to run our usual residential Senior Camp at the Ardingly Show ground. Although we are currently operating in uncertain times we need to move forward with our camp planning and so we are asking for commitment and a deposit to secure your child’s place. The Branch has made a payment to confirm the camp dates but please be reassured that should we have to cancel camp due to Covid, full refunds will be made.

I am expecting demand for places this year to be high so if you are happy with the refund policy outlined on the application please get your forms and deposits in as soon as you can as the places will be allocated on a first come basis.

ESPC Senior Camp 2021

I’m delighted to open applications FROM Monday 8th February for this year’s Senior Camp to members currently in school year 7 and above.

Camp is an exciting opportunity to develop equestrian skills and experience all things horsey with like-minded pony mad friends.

We will return to the South Of England Event Centre, Ardingly, West Sussex RH17 6TL

Camp starts at 10am Monday August 2nd until midday Saturday 7th August.

Camp involves an action-packed week both on and off their pony/horse. Campers have plenty of opportunity to forge friendships firstly in their ride group and secondly in their team group.

Campers look after their own stabled pony/horse under the watchful eye of the yard team which is made up of mature Pony Club members.

Days are busy with campers receiving four hours equestrian instruction daily, making full use of Ardingly’s three arena’s and extensive XC area.

Evening activities are fun & informative developing friendships through team challenges, talks & whole camp experiences.

Accommodation is in the form of small two-bed rooms and a dormitory which sleeps up to ten. Children often decide who to share with once they arrive at camp and discover which ride & team group they are in.

All meals are lovingly prepared on site by an army of camp parents under the fabulous guidance of our camp chef & housekeepers.

The cost of camp will be £395 paid in full or a deposit of £95 followed by 5 x monthly payments of £60. This includes everything apart from your horse’s feed, hay & bedding.

Places will be limited and offered on a first come basis.

To guarantee a place please complete the booking form which will be available from Monday 8th February along with online a £95 deposit or full payment

2021 Online Renewals

The renewal process is now managed by HQ rather than within the branch.

You should have now received the necessary emails to both activate your account and renew your membership.

Please remember to check your spam folders as emails were sent out again over this weekend (9/10 Jan)

All Pony Club memberships and renewals should now be made directly with The Pony Club Office at Stoneleigh.

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIPS
(those with less than 3 riding members in the same household).

You should have received 2 emails with details of how to renew via the new online portal.

- The first contains the renewal reminder and membership details.

- The second contains a custom link to the portal. When you click this link you will be asked to enter a password.

- This is a new online portal so you will need to create a new password.

- You will then be asked to login with your username (the email address to which the renewal reminder was sent) and your newly created password.

• Early renewal notices are being sent this year to try and phase out the renewal process for memberships expiring 31/1/2021.

• A reminder to those who have not renewed will be resent the first week of January. Thereafter, reminders will be sent one month prior to renewal date, and then 2 weeks before if not renewed.

• Using the online portal, you will be able to check and update any contact details, and members and pay online.

• You will not be able to change the branch or membership type (Riding or Non-riding) – if you need to do this please contact your branch to initiate the transfer process or contact membership@pcuk.org to change your membership type.

• Memberships will be for a 12-month period from the date of expiry

• If you renew in December and your membership expires on 31 January 2021 then your new membership will run until 31 January 2022.

FAMILY MEMBERSHIPS

If you have a family membership, or want to add members to create a family membership, you will need to download the membership form either from your branch website or https://pcuk.org/find-a-club/ complete the form and email to membership@pcuk.org OR by post to the address on the form.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

Membership fees for 2021 remain as 2020:

Non-riding member £36; riding member £80 and family memberships £200 (up to 5 members in the same household).

Don't forget to complete the Gift Aid section as this will create more funds for your Branch.

Official PC Notice following new Covid lockdown

A MESSAGE FROM THE PONY CLUB CEO

The Prime Minister announced last night (Mon 4 Jan) that England is now in National lockdown and in addition The First Minister for Scotland put mainland Scotland into lockdown. We must all stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.

The Pony Club Management Committee have been in discussion today and have made the decision to suspend ALL face-to-face activity with immediate effect and until further notice.

The Pony Club will move back to the lockdown Phase of The Pony Club COVID 19 Operational Plan, which can be found HERE . Riding from home when needed for the welfare of the horse or pony is still permitted by the Government. We would ask that all riders consider the risk of their activity and ride within their capabilities, to reduce any unnecessary burden on the NHS.

We would like to thank our members, parents and volunteers for their support of The Pony Club in this decision to play our part to protect each other.

Please continue to log in to your online Members Area on our website, where we are working hard to add new activities and resources to access and enjoy, whilst we are not meeting face-to-face. A reminder of the password: pony1929

A Message from our new DC

As the new DC I would like to wish all members and their families a Happy New Year.

After what can best be described as a difficult year I would like to thank Lisa for all her hard work behind the scenes to try and bring as many events as possible to our members. A well deserved rest is in order. Also, huge thanks must go to the discipline heads, instructors and committee members as without their dedication and perseverance, training, rallies, tests, camps and competitions would have not been possible. We are not out of the woods yet but I am confident that together we will continue to demonstrate resilience and resourcefulness. We are exploring options for a safe return to face-to-face activities, updates will be posted on ESPC’s website and our members Facebook page when available.

I’m excited by my new role and look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months. I already have many fond memories being involved in Pony Club activities and I know there are many more to come. For me Pony Club is not just about the riding but the life-long friendships that come from participating in all things horsey. This is not only true for the children but the parents and helpers that all come together to make Pony Club the fantastic organisation that we are.

Hi Everyone

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas, even if it was a bit different this year, hopefully next year life will get back to some sort of normality.

Over the last year I have done a lot of soul searching and after being a Pony Club mum, committee member, Branch Secretary, Assistant DC and DC for almost 17 years I have taken the very difficult decision to retire.

I have had an amazing time over the years and have many wonderful, fun-filled memories which will always be with me.

The DC role will be filled by the lovely Clare Bassett who has been my assistant for a number of years. The branch is in a strong place with lots of wonderful members and I know Clare will take the branch forward to an even stronger and better place.

I will retire on 31st December 2020 and Clare will take over on 1 January 2021 and I know you will all support Clare in her new role.

I look forward to seeing you all out and about and wish you all the very best for the future.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DC AND ASSISTANT DC

As you will probably be aware the Government has issued a new Tier system to help control the spread of coronavirus, especially in light of the new strand that has been identified.

Due to this we have made the difficult decision to cancel all activities with immediate effect.

The Area 11 Rep sent a message out to cancel all face-to-face activities which was posted on Facebook last night (19th Dec).

HQ also issued the notice regarding Tier 4 - we have members in Tiers 2 & 4 and as we are all in the same branch both Clare and myself feel a blanket ban on all activities is the safest way forward. We are so close to the Tier 4 boundary it's a risk we don't feel we can justify and the safety of our members and their families must be our priority. I know it's very disappointing but everyone's safety is the most important thing, especially at this time of year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for supporting the branch over this trying year and I am sure we will be up and running again very soon.

In the meantime, have a great Christmas.

Sincere apologies for having to cancel the last two events of 2020. Hugely disappointing and upsetting it is a decision we have not made lightly. Lisa and I feel it is a sensible precaution in light of the government announcement and the new virus strand being rife locally.

Whilst many members live in Tier 2 areas others are sadly now under the strictest Tier 4 measures.

Hopefully the excitement of Christmas next week and schools having broken up will help to distract from understandable frustration and disappointment.

We will update you as soon as we are able to.

ALL PONY CLUB ACTIVITIES STOPPED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

As you will have seen over the weekend we are going into another lockdown from midnight Wednesday 4th November until December.

Unfortunately, this means that from Thursday 5th November no clinics, training or shows will be able to take place .

It is very sad this has had to happen again but everyone's health must come first.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for supporting the branch over these trying months and I am sure we will be up and running again very soon.

To ensure everyone’s safety you are agreeing to the following terms when you book into any ESPC training or attend any Pony Club event or competition.

Do not attend if anyone in your household is awaiting a Covid test, result or is feeling unwell with any Covid symptoms.

Arrive - Take Part - Leave ASAP

Track & Trace is now a legal requirement for our activities - ALL attending persons to be registered on ESPC web Track & Trace within 24hours of ALL training, events and PC competitions including inter branch events. QR codes can be used at some venues but this is in addition to ESPC website notification system not instead.

Essential people only - ideally one adult to one rider - extra adults (driver) should stay with vehicle. A sibling, if they must attend , should stay with household adult.

Have available your own hand gel, masks & gloves for all people in your party.

Bubbles = rule of 6 maximum anywhere on site

2m social distancing between people, when not possible or indoors masks must be worn

10m minimum social distancing between Bubbles anywhere on site

20m social distancing between Ride & Bubbles or maximum distance possible indoors/covered arena’s

Parking 3m minimum, 10m preferred between vehicles

Parents must ensure tack is safe and secure before the session starts

As always take home all hay, poo and litter around your vehicle

Unfortunately we have decided to cancel the Working Rally at Crockstead due to the practicality of running the day in line with the Covid guidelines.

Instead I was going to run the following at Crockstead if there is the uptake and demand:

• An E test - this is an optional test, taken from 4yrs, please follow the link for the TEST CARD

• A D test - this is the first of the Pony Club Tests and where everyone needs to start and is taken from 8yrs. Please follow the link for the TEST CARD

• A D+ test - this Test can be taken once the D Test has been achieved, taken from 10yrs. Please follow the link for the TEST CARD

• A session for those that have achieved their D+ Test, hoping to take their C Test in summer 2021, gaining some feedback on how near or far they are to the level required and things to work on over the winter. Please follow the link for the TEST CARD

• A session for those that have achieved their C Test, hoping to take their C+ Test in summer 2021, gaining some feedback on how near or far they are to the level required and things to work on over the winter. Please follow the link for the TEST CARD

All sessions will involve riding and stable management, the dress code will be the same as that required for a Working Rally - horses and ponies do not need to be plaited but will need to be clean.

If you are wanting to take one of the Tests, please ensure you are at the required level.

Saturday starts with clear round cross-pole jumping progressing gradually up to 70cm.

Sunday includes the Debut and Classic qualifiers for the new PC Spring Festival along with team showjumping and a fun Accumulator class.

- No toilets or water available on site

- No dogs

Great news!!

Pony Club guidelines now permit small gatherings of six, therefore we are issuing the following advice to assist those wishing to attend ESPC training. Please familiarise yourself and discuss them with your rider and any attending adults and children so they are familiar with the new procedures BEFORE arriving.

- Please do not arrive too early - a 15min gap will be allowed between sessions to keep gatherings small.

- Parking will be in your training group with a preferred 10m distance between lorries/trailers. At Montague organisers will put out 2 sets of 4 poles on different sides of the arena - Each group will have their own parking side - please park with your group, one vehicle in front of one pole not between.

- Once tacked up remain unmounted by your lorry and wait for the instructor/organiser to call you into the arena. Please be aware that there may be a delay between groups. Warming up before your lesson is not permitted. Your group will have up to four riders.

- All non riding attending people should remain with their vehicle away from the riding area. You may sit outside the vehicle keeping at least 2m apart, up to a maximum of 6 people.

- We would prefer only one member of the family to accompany the rider if at all possible but appreciate this is not always possible. Siblings are now permitted but they should stay inside or next to their vehicle under the parents supervision at all times.

- Parents must ensure the tack is safe and secure before the lesson starts. If called to assist with tack adjustments only one parent may enter the arena at a time. Instructors can only provide a visual check.

- Only the instructor & organisers should move or assemble jumps, poles, arenas etc. At the end of your session please return immediately to your vehicle with your pony. As exciting as it is to see your friends it is important we maintain the gathering of no more than 6 at all times. This is very different to what is natural behaviour but social distancing is an essential part of keeping everyone safe. We will all hopefully adapt very quickly and realise we can still socialise with our friends from 2 meters away in small gatherings!

- Please provide your own hand gel and use before and after touching gates, equipment etc. Please maintain good hygiene regularly when at the venue.

- Be aware that there will be no toilet facilities so you must make your own provision.

- Please ensure the area around your trailer/lorry is cleared before you leave and take home.

- PC head office have requested that no photography is posted on social media please.

- Payments should be made as directed by the training organiser at the time of booking i.e. advanced online or cash on the day

We will be running C Test training over the summer, every Tuesday evening at Montague for those looking to take their test. We are hoping to run a test towards the end of the summer.

I’d like to get an idea of numbers, so please could you email me at rebecca@amess.org if you would like to book into the first session on Tuesday 30th June .

There will be groups of 4 riders max, for two hours – one hour riding and one hour stable management (social distancing will be considered throughout so each rider will need to bring their own equipment for stable management which I will email details nearer the time).

There will be a 5.15pm - 7.15pm group to allow for those who are back at school/work and an earlier group 3pm - 5pm if we need two groups (allowing for a 15 minute changeover).

Let me know in your email which time would work best for you but it will depend on numbers so I will confirm times.

Unfortunately COVID-19 restrictions means we have sadly had to cancel our residential Senior Camp at Ardingly. As camp is a Pony Club highlight for many members we have coordinated an alternative experience for our senior members offering equine learning with some much needed social fun (keeping socially distanced of course!)

New look Senior Camp for riders currently in school year 7 and above will now be ;

- three days between Mon 10th to Fri 14th August - approx times 9.30am to 4.30pm - arriving and departing daily.

- based at Montague for TWO days offering variety and fun in flatwork, polework, grids, various jumping on grass and in a 60x30 sand arena - riding twice a day plus stable management

- the THIRD day will be at a specialist XC external venue such as Lodge Farm, Bonfleur, Hickstead or similar with great ground and fantastic jumps.

- after careful consideration we are working on a budget of £155 for a three day experience (an additional supplement may be required once the specialist venue is confirmed but we are hopeful that this won’t be the case).

Apologies that I can’t be more specific, times are certainly different and ever changing therefore we will need to be flexible in our camp planning and implementation but rest assured we will always work within up to date Pony Club and Government guidelines. With flexibility and adaptability I’m positive we can enjoy a wonderful camp experience.

Road Rider Achievement Badge

I have arranged for the Mini Road Rider Achievement Badge and Road Rider Achievement Badge to take place on the 26th July 2020 .

The Mini Road Rider Achievement Badge is for our younger members to be taken before the D test, giving them an introduction to riding on the road, road safety etc, £10 each

The Road Rider Achievement Badge is for our older members that have already achieved their D+, training towards their C. The badge is a prerequisite before the C test . This is at least 3-5hrs long, with the training involved and then the test too, £25 each

This is the only time we will be running these badges until next summer so please ensure you book in with me ASAP to secure a place. Once we know numbers, we can give you more information.

GREAT NEWS! Summer Rallies return to Montague

Summer rallies at Montague will start again next week - Wednesday evening or Saturday dependant on numbers.

Please email Louise Powell if you wish to register interest.

First rally will be held on Saturday 13th June (10-4). Times TBC.

In order to make this happen we have to follow these guidelines;

1) Only 1 Arena with 4 (off lead) riders, 1 instructor , 1 committee member to assist.

2) No non riding siblings/ spectators

3) 15 mins change over time between groups

Sadly we cannot accommodate lead rein riders at the moment due to gathering size restrictions.

The first rally will be a FLAT rally.

Hi, I have been in touch with Olympia they have told me if I can get enough interest, we can book a whole carriage on the Olympia Express.

For those of you that haven’t been before the train runs on the Hastings line direct to Olympia station, it is a fantastic steam train with a buffet car for food and drinks on board, or you can bring your own, you can leave coats and food on the train for the return journey,

They cost is usually around £100 per person which includes the cost of the Olympia tickets.

It is the afternoon session so time to finish horses on your return.

ALL PONY CLUB ACTIVITIES STOPPED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

I am sorry to inform you but as from today (Tuesday 17 March) ALL Pony Club Branch activities must stop to comply with the Government’s statement in relation to controlling the spread of Covid-19. Please see the statement which is on the Pony Club website:

"The Pony Club Board of Trustees has been in discussion today and has made the very difficult decision to cancel all centrally organised events.

This includes the Winter Triathlon at Stoke Mandeville on Sunday 22nd March and The Winter Series Final at Arena UK 4th / 5th April.

Following The Prime Minister’s announcement this evening, requesting that we minimise social contact and non-essential travel, we advise that ALL Pony Club activities cease with immediate effect.

We would like to thank our members, parents and volunteers for their support of The Pony Club in this decision to play our part in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Please continue to stay safe and well during this difficult time.

This year it is with great pleasure that United States Pony Clubs, Inc. invites the International Hunting Exchange countries to the USPC 2020 International Hunting Exchange to be held in the Southeast U.S. November 20 – November 29, 2020.

This invitation is extended to one team of four members, and one team manager (chaperone) per country. Team members must be between 18‐25 as of 1st January 2020 and possess a minimum of B Test Riding and references from their branch DC and Hunt Master.

Area 11 will be running a B Test Riding at Pachesham on Friday 17th April.
There are limited places and priority will be given to those signed up for the Mock Test.

2020 Mounted Games Comps

Upcoming local Mounted Games competitions for 2020

Novice, Junior & Senior Games competitions are great fun and a must for those keen to take their games to the next level - there are five riders in a team but only four riders do each race - teams do 6 to 8 races with competitions lasting at least an hour depending on entries - a maximum of six teams race at any one time in a large roped off grass arena. - entry usually costs between £12 to £20 per rider - Seniors are usually in the morning 10am start, Novice around midday and Juniors about 2pm - it is also a great spectator sport.

Competition ages are as follows:

Novice - lead rein/ just off/ building confidence - not quite ready for riding independently in junior section - usually walk & trot only

Junior - riders not to have reached their 11th birthday on 01.01.2020

Senior - riders not to have reached their 15th birthday on 01.01.2020

Would you like to find out more about careers in the horseracing industry?

Following a highly successful pilot scheme, The Pony Club and Racing to School are continuing to work together on the Racing to School’s Riders’ Programme! We are pleased to be able to offer FREE workshops for Pony Club Members aged 12 and over during the February half term holiday.

We will be running a Riders' Programme Event at Lingfield Racecourse on Monday 17th February 2020.

The events take place on a raceday and parents are encouraged to stay and participate and will also gain FREE entry to the racecourse.

The programme is designed to encourage those who already ride and/or have an interest in other equine spheres, to further develop their interest in Horseracing and consider Racing as a potential career path or pastime. The workshops provide fun and informative activities, aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding of Racing. The Racing to School’s Team will take Pony Club Members (and parents/guardians) behind the scenes of the Racecourse. Gaining access to normally restricted areas such as the Weighing Room, Stable entrance and the Racecourse itself. There will be opportunities for a possible meet and greet with a Jockey, to hear first-hand from the Racecourse Management Team, Ground Staff and the Equine Welfare and Integrity Officers. All this before the thrills and excitement of a full afternoon’s racing!

For those young people hoping to combine their love of horses with a future career, the team can also advise and provide details on how to access the vast range of career choices the Horseracing and Thoroughbred Breeding Industries have to offer.

C+ Training & Test

We are in the process of arranging C+ Training and a Test for this summer. To get a rough idea of numbers, please can you let me know by the 1st Feb 2020 if your child would like to take their test this summer.

They need to be committed to all the training that we offer as well as doing their own self study and practice, it is a big step up from the C test!!

They need to be 13 and to have already achieved their C test.

You will also need to attend the C+ Mock Test Day on the 7th April at Crockstead; more details of which can be found at https://branches.pcuk.org/area11/efficiency-tests/ and don’t forget that the nomination forms need to be approved by Lisa Taylor.

NEW: ESPC League Details

ESPC League

EXCITING NEWS . . .

The Club are going to be running a League throughout 2020, open to all members . Points can be gained by entering Club run shows and points will also be awarded on where you come in the classes. Points will be allocated per combination .

The League will run from January to December.

How it will work:

Points:

1 point for each away PC show entered

3 points for each ESPC show entered

10 points for a win in an ESPC run class in Dressage, Show Jumping , Eventing and TET descending to 1 point for 10th place.

3 points for attending the first Mounted Games Winter Pairs competition and 1 point for each one after that.

5 points for attending a camp.

Points allocated for the same combination, there can be any number of combinations.

Divisions:

There are four age 'divisions' (working on school class ages as of January 2020):

Mini - year 3 and below

Junior - year 6 and below

Intermediates - year 11 and below

Senior - 16 years and over

Prize:

The winner in each 'division' will get an 'ESPC League Winner 2020' rug!

So get out there competing and representing your Pony Club!

C and C+ Stable Management

Starting 21st January 2020 at Pine Tree Stables

We have organised some C and C+ level stable management sessions over the next few months as I know there has been some demand! I will be running them at Pine Tree Stables, all from 6pm – 7.30pm. The following dates have been arranged:

21st January – C Training (Care and working of a pony off grass & Feeding and Watering)

28th January - C+ Training (Management of Horses and Ponies in Work & Feeding)

18th February – C Training (Shoeing & First Aid)

25th February – C+ Training (Foot and Shoeing & Health and First Aid)

17th March – C Training (Tack, Rugs & Travelling)

24th March – C+ Training (Grooming, Bandaging and Travel & Tack)

Let me know if you would like to book in and which sessions. Open to all working towards these tests but also members who may be too young to take the next test this year but want to join in.

Cost of the sessions is £7, pay on the day.

Wrap up warm as some of the sessions will be outside! Please wear suitable footwear for around the yard and bring riding hats and gloves.

Location: Pinetree Stables, Freezelands Lane, Bexhill on Sea, TN39 5JD.

Directions:

From Ninfield Road, turn into Freezelands lane, drive past Pinetree Farm House Entrance follow the lane a short way to the next gateway on your left, there will be traffic cone to mark the entrance. Follow the track to the horse trailer parking and turn left through the gateway going in between the paddocks you will come to the yard where you can drop children off. Parking at the yard is limited but you are welcome to stay parked up for the duration in the car park where the trailers and horse boxes are parked.

Rewarding our Members' achievements

At the AGM on Saturday 30th November ESPC Members were rewarded for their 2019 achievements.

Members received cups, trophies, shields and competition badges marking team, personal and branch achievements.

A few members gained their Public Speaking badge after giving as short speech about their Pony Club experiences.

A list of trophy/cup recipients can be found HERE .

Trophies and cups will need to engraved and returned to Jane Brian-Davis before the 2020 AGM & Prize Giving in the autumn.
